One of two graduation films made in my final year of university, Nirvana is a story of estrangement and impermanence; of the beauty and simplicity hidden in overlooked moments. Nirvana is a poem by Charles Bukowski, using a bus journey to imply a man's longing to find a place he calls home. Although the act of taking a bus somewhere is ordinary, the poem focuses on the extraordinary details often ignored and overlooked in everyday life.
I wanted the design to help make the audience feel the cold atmosphere and texture of snow. I focused on shots that boiled on open spaces, providing a sense of solitude and reflection. The destination of the bus journey is described as 'somewhere' and the character remains ambiguous throughout the poem. I wanted to reflect this in the design of my character, emphasising the fleeting nature of relationships whilst travelling and helping to add to the sense of uncertainty and anonymity.
